I know you said don't compare it to SMBZ, but quite frankly, it's hard not to. It's not at quite that level yet, but it is VERY similar, what with the effects and all.
First, the graphics. Usual 32 bit and, later on, 8-bit sprites. I don't mind sprites, actually. People say they prefer drawn movies, but it depends on the artist. I know you're a good artist, but still. Sprites are easier to work with, and you MADE it work with clever use of 3D and camera panning.
The storyline takes an unoriginal idea but makes it SHINE along the way. You nail each characters personality perfectly. Mario, the usual hero. Luigi the usual.... unlucky coward. Sonic, the... second usual hero. And Shadow, the guy who thinks he can take Mecha Sonic by himself. Shadow's good at fighting, but not quite there yet. And Mecha Sonic. the villianous asshole.
The humour is... well, not exactly brilliant, but that's not what this flash is really about. Wario lands on Waluigi and farts. I admit... that's... just not very funny too me. But the idea of Bowser throwing a tantrum made me chuckle.
The violence is well done. I don't like animations with lots of blood. This has no blood, but that works for it. Blood has no real place in Sonic or Mario games. I also love how, when Mario and Sonic go 8-bits, you use 8-bittish music as well.
So, a wonderful sprite movie. I hope the wait for episode 8 won't be quite as long, but if it is, as long as it's a good as, if not, better than this one, I won't mind.
Good movie, BUT. The finger comes from ENGLISH HISTORY.
Basically, if the French caught a English longbowman.... before killing them, they would cut of their index and middle finger. So, afterwards, when the English had beaten the French, longbowmen would give them the 'finger' or 'fingers'. To basically say 'HA-HA, FUCK YOU, I STILL HAVE MY FINGERS.'

It's well done, and uses a nice mix of music, some examples being Zero's talking music in the intro and X vs Zero in fights.

Besides, the most over-rated character in Naruto is definatly Sasuke.
As for the movie... yeah it wasn't funny or amusing.

Well worth the time
This is better than some CONSOLE video games. Seriously, well worth the time put into it.
